Special areas of the hotel grounds are made accessible to our visitors through guided tours of the exclusive rooms: the historic cellar, the wineBANK Mosel – a private members club for wine enthusiasts and the permanent exhibition ‘Education Wine’.
In DEINHARD's sparkling wine workshop, interested hotel visitors can learn a lot about traditional craftsmanship and take part in the production of fine sparkling wines.
The DEINHARD’s indoor market, adjacent to the historic market square in Bernkastel-Kues, offers inspiring gifts and unusual collections.
In short: DEINHARD's is more than a hotel: reside - experience - savour, new interior in historic walls from the 17th century and a unique view of Bernkastel-Kues and the Moselle.
The many years of construction activity around and in the historic buildings of DEINHARD's is not least the result of a sustainability concept.
The restoration of ancient Renaissance and historism roofs and façades is particularly economical in terms of materials.
Many of the sandstones and paving stones found on the site, which were buried in the ground after the partial destruction of Bernkastel-Kues in 1945 due to the bombing, could be reused. Ancient sandstones, which have found their place in the hotel lobby, and all the paving around the buildings, which was made exclusively from old found stones, are evidence of this.
The energy concept has been implemented according to the latest sustainability standards. Old oil heating systems have been completely dismantled and heat pumps now supply new underfloor heating systems. All windows have been stylishly renewed in laminated wood and metal and do not require painting. The interior walls are made of highly insulating hollow bricks made of clay, plastered and painted with minerals and lime, breathable. All roofs are covered in local spruce wood and hand-crushed slate. The floors are predominantly made of fired ceramics and wood. Most of the ceilings are made of rolled wood wool, non-combustible and acoustically perfect. Light from low-consumption LEDs. Rainwater for the parks, from historic cisterns for fountains and courtyards.
The entire interior design was chosen with sustainability in mind; everything is reusable and recyclable. Wood, metal, lots of recycled cork and natural materials were used.
Common sense determined the design of the bathrooms: simple, elegant, practical. In the hotel lobby, 300-year-old tree trunks pulled from the Wadden Sea, where they were used to fortify the dunes, invite you to sit down. Next to them are display cabinets built by a local locksmith and fitted with local stone types such as slate, pebble and basalt.
Both restaurants have ceramic-clad counters, lots of wooden furniture made from local woods and large tiled floors.
There are charging stations in the underground car parks and in the hotel's bicycle cellar, which are operated with green electricity in cooperation with a provider.
DEINHARD's Hotel and Event is not a singular project, but is embedded by its owners in several wine estates that cultivate vineyards in the best locations of the Middle Moselle, Saar and Ruwer. Among other things, these vineyards are dedicated to the ecological regeneration of abandoned vineyards (rebuilding collapsed dry stone walls, supporting landslide slopes, etc.) and testing new and fungus-resistant grape varieties for the Moselle. For the cultivation of planting material and for the production of organically grown herbs as ground cover between the vines on the steep slope, the wineries maintain a greenhouse that also supplies the restaurants and the shop in DEINHARD's with these herbs.
The wineries recently planted areas of new mixed forest in co-operation with the municipal foresters. Such projects are widely supported in the spirit of a family policy focussed on generations.
Since 1987, grapes have been produced in accordance with the regulations of organic viticulture on 10 hectares of our own wooded area. The organic Riesling produced from these grapes has been an integral part of the product range for over 30 years.
If you add up the cultivated open spaces in forestry, agriculture and viticulture, DEINHARD's is climate-neutral.
From a social point of view, Hotel DEINHARD's is a value-preserving, inner-city redevelopment in the historic town centre of Bernkastel-Kues. Vacant, dilapidated houses have been put to new use and have given this area of the town a new face.
